Perito Moreno is one of the few glaciers on earth that is not measurably retreating. Its terminus has held roughly the same position for over a century, fed by the Southern Patagonian Ice Field — the third-largest reserve of fresh water on the planet, after Antarctica and Greenland.
The glacier takes its name from Francisco Pascasio Moreno, the naturalist and territorial expert whose surveys in the 1870s and 1880s helped fix Argentina's boundary with Chile through this contested cordillera. Los Glaciares National Park was created in 1937 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, protecting some 726,000 hectares of ice field, southern beech forest and steppe. Within it, forty-eight major glaciers descend from the Andes. Perito Moreno is neither the largest nor the highest, but it is the most theatrical, and the el calafate glacier tour boat routes exist because of a single geographic accident: the ice advances until it touches the Magallanes Peninsula, sealing off the southern arm of Lago Argentino.
What follows is a slow-motion catastrophe on a repeating schedule. Water trapped behind the dam rises — historically by as much as thirty metres — until pressure carves a tunnel through the ice. The tunnel widens into an arch. The arch collapses. Ruptures have been recorded irregularly since 1917, sometimes years apart, and the sound carries for kilometres across the water. Between ruptures, the front simply calves: five kilometres of wall, standing seventy-four metres above the lake surface and roughly 170 metres below it, shedding towers of ice that fall with a delay between sight and sound.
The blue is not a trick of the sky. Compressed over centuries, glacial ice expels its air bubbles; the dense crystal absorbs the red end of the spectrum and returns only cobalt. Naturalists of Moreno's generation described it in terms of masonry, and the vocabulary persists — seracs, walls, buttresses, the Brazo Rico approach that Patagonia glacier cruises still follow.
Today the park's steel walkway system, built into the peninsula's slope, lets visitors face the northern wall at multiple elevations without touching the ice. Foreign adults pay a conservation fee of 45,000 ARS per day, and the gates operate 08:00–18:00 daily.
